LSU Coach Les Miles went out and hired Kevin Steele who coached at Alabama, and also hired on Ed Orgeron who coached at Ole Miss and USC. It seems like the SEC West is shifting defensive coordinators throughout the league, Will Muschamp goes to Auburn, John Chavis goes to Texas AM, and now Kevin Steele comes to LSU after leaving Alabama.
Les Miles comments on Kevin Steele.
“Kevin has had a very successful coaching career, one that has seen him coach alongside some of the top coaches in the game,” Miles said in a LSU news release. “He won a national title with Tom Osborne at Nebraska, coached with Bobby Bowden at Florida State, and coached in the NFL with one of the great defensive coaches in Dom Capers.”
Les Miles commented on Ed Orgeron:
“Ed is an expert when it comes to the defensive line,” Miles said in a statement. “He will bring tremendous enthusiasm and energy to our program. His passion and love for the state of Louisiana makes him a great fit for us.
“Ed has done a great job at every coaching stop he’s made. His teams are always well prepared, played hard on every snap and fed off the enthusiasm and excitement that he brought to the field. This is a great hire for us and we are really excited about Coach O becoming a Tiger.”
It seems as though Ed Orgeron stole the show as the focus shifted to him as he came on stage and talk about being home and back in Manderville where his family lives. Orgeron, who was head coach at Ole Miss from 2005 to 2007, served as an assistant with the New Orleans Saints and the Tennessee Volunteers before following Kiffin to USC, where he was defensive line coach.
Orgeron was out of college football last season after he led USC to a 6-2 record following the firing of then-coach Lane Kiffin in 2013. The Trojans hired Steve Sarkisian, who finished the 2014 season with a 9-4 record, including a bowl win over Nebraska.
I got a chance to speak to Coach Orgeron during the press conference and asked him if he is ready to pepper the gumbo for some qb’s in the SEC, and he brought up the Blind Side right away and we talked about the movie and USC Football. I told him I been to some USC Football games living in the Southern Cally area for 10 years, and he asked what years, I said the 2003 thru 2010 years, he commented and said those were some good years for USC Football.
