Fournette named Maxwell Award semifinalist

Fournette Named Maxwell Award Semi-Finalist

BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU junior running back Leonard Fournette was named a semi-finalist for the 2016 Maxwell Award the Maxwell Football Club announced, which is given to college football’s top player.

Fournette is one of four players from the Southeastern Conference to make the cut of 18 semi-finalists, while one of three players who were semi-finalists last season. The list features Fournette as one of the five running backs selected to go along with eight quarterbacks, a wide receiver, athlete and a defensive player.

The New Orleans, native currently leads LSU in rushing with 683 total yards on the ground, averaging 167.5 yards per game and 8.1 yards per carry in just four games of action. Fournette has five touchdowns on the year which is second among the team’s running back core, while catching 12 passes for 94 yards.

After missing two consecutive games Fournette made his return against Ole Miss and rushed for an LSU single-game record 284 yards and three touchdowns against the Rebels, giving him the career record for most 200-yard rushing games with five, as the Tigers moved to 15-4 all-time when he rushes for over 100 yards.

Voting for the award will begin on Tuesday, November 1st and will close on November 21st. Three finalists for the award will be announced on November 22, 2016 and a second round of voting will take place at that time. Eligible voters include Maxwell Football Club members, NCAA head football coaches, sports information directors and selected national media. All semifinalists are listed in alphabetical order with the player’s school, position and class designated.

LSU returns to action on Saturday night, hosting the Alabama Crimson Tide at 7 p.m. on CBS.

Adams Named Lott IMPACT Quarterfinalist

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – LSU junior safety Jamal Adams was named as one of 19 quarterfinalists for the Lott IMPACT Trophy the Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation announced.

The 19 players represent the best college defensive players in the nation who make the biggest IMPACT on their team both on and off the field. IMPACT is an acronym for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity.

Adams is one of five players from the Southeastern Conference to earn a spot after the first round of cuts, as the Lott Trophy adds to the preseason watch lists the Texas native found himself on in the preseason including the Thorpe, Nagurski and Bednarik.

Currently third on the team with 50 total tackles, Adams has started all seven games for the Tigers in his junior season earning 25 assisted and unassisted so far this year. He has 2.5 tackles for loss and three pass breakups, forcing and recovering a fumble as well against Southern Miss two weeks ago. He’s earned double-digit tackles in two of the last four games, including having a career-best 13 on the road at Auburn.

Adams has started 21 games in three seasons at LSU, while playing in 32 total contests as before the season he was named to the preseason All-SEC Second Team by the coaches and media.

Semi-finalists will be announced November 9 and four finalists will be announced November 30. The four finalists will attend the Lott IMPACT Trophy Awards Banquet December 11 at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach where the winner will be announced by Ronnie Lott. The winner of the 2016 Lott IMPACT Trophy will be announced live on FOX Sports on Sunday, December 11th at 7pm PST.

LSU is off this week, returning to the field next Saturday to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide in Baton Rouge.

Fournette, Pocic Earn SEC Weekly Honors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – LSU junior running back Leonard Fournette was named the SEC’s Offensive Player of the Week, while senior center Ethan Pocic was named the SEC Co-Offensive Lineman of the Week the league announced Monday morning, two days after LSU’s 38-21 win over Ole Miss in Tiger Stadium.

Fournette is the sixth player to earn one of the league’s weekly awards, joining teammates Tre’Davious White, Arden Key, Josh Growden and Derrius Guice who all earned awards earlier this year, while Pocic is earning one of the league’s weekly top honors for the second time this season. It’s the fourth time Fournette has earned offensive player of the week honors and the seventh time he’s been honored by the conference in his career.

After missing the previous two games, Fournette made his return to the field last Saturday in a big way as the St. Augustine product rushed for 284 yards and three touchdowns on just 16 carries in the 38-21 win over the Rebels in Tiger Stadium, breaking Alley Broussard’s 2004 record of 250 which was also set against Ole Miss.

He scored on runs of 59, 76 and 78 yards, averaging a school-record 17.8 yards per carry as the total yardage is now tied for 10th all-time in the SEC, while the yards per carry is second all-time within the conference. He had 171 of those yards in the first half alone as LSU has had a 100-yard rusher in each of the last 10 games.

Fournette took sole place of first all-time at LSU with his fifth 200-yard rushing game of his career on Saturday, passing Kevin Faulk who had a 200-yard game in each of his four seasons at LSU and Fournette having four in 2015 alone. LSU also moved to 15-4 when Fournette reaches the 100-yard mark in a game, and 5-0 when he reaches 200.

Pocic graded out at a career-best 97 percent on the line as the Tigers produced 515 total yards of offense, while along with Fournette the Tiger running backs accounted for 311 yards and four touchdowns.

The Lemont, Illinois, native played every snap of LSU’s win over the weekend, earning 12 knockdown blocks as the LSU offense held possession of the ball for nearly 10 minutes in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.

LSU is off this week, returning to the field next Saturday to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide in Baton Rouge.

“We are happy with the decision to have our game against Florida rescheduled for November 19 in Tiger Stadium. As previously reported, it was our wish to have played the game last weekend but all options that we put on the table were declined. After extensive discussion, the University of Florida agreed to play the 2016 contest in Baton Rouge and LSU agreed to play the 2017 game in Gainesville.

“I want to thank the Southeastern Conference, in particular Commissioner Greg Sankey, for his efforts to make sure that we found a place on the schedule to play the game. This is a game that our players and fans look forward to each year and we are appreciative of the lengths that our league office went to in order to make this game happen.

“Historically, we have always enjoyed a great relationship with Florida. We have great respect for their institution and their football program. I hope that we can all learn from this experience and as a league, be in a better position to deal with these situations in the future.”

LSU’S EAGLE SCOUT ETLING TALKS BOY SCOUTS AT BATON ROUGE BUSINESS & INDUSTRY LEADERS

BATON ROUGE – Danny Etling is the starting quarterback for the 25th-ranked LSU football team. He’s also an Eagle Scout. It’s quite possible that he’s the first person in school history to do both.

On Tuesday, Etling addressed the Business and Industry Leaders Luncheon presented by the Istrouma Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America and told the audience how becoming an Eagle Scout helped make him the person he is today.

Only four percent of all Boy Scouts reach Eagle Scout status, which is the highest attainable mark for the organization. To reach Eagle Scout status, Etling had to earn at least 21 merit badges and in doing so, he joined the likes of Gerald Ford, Steven Spielberg, Neil Armstrong, and Sam Walton as some of the most famous Eagle Scouts.

Etling will make his fourth LSU start on Saturday when the Tigers host Southern Miss at 6:30 p.m. in Tiger Stadium. Etling, a junior from Terre Haute, Ind., said his experience as a Boy Scout helped him grow as a person and taught him skills that have made him become a better football player.

“I played sports growing up and joined the Boys Scouts as an after-school activity with some of my friends,” Etling told the group, which included Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards, who served as the Keynote Speaker on Tuesday. “As I grew up, it was my mom that kept pushing me to (remain a Boy Scout). I never understood why. But the more I went camping and earning badges, the more I grew as a person.

“I still remember camping with my mom and her leading my Boy Scout Troop. It was a little weird that it was my mom who was doing it, but I think those are the moments you remember most. You don’t necessarily remember that moment you learned how to tie a knot, but you remember all of the relationships you build and the life skills such as leadership, loyalty – things that actually matter in life -= that you learn.”

Etling said that he attributes where he is today – the starting quarterback at LSU – because of his mom and his experiences as a Boy Scout.

“I think that’s what the goal of Boys Scouts is to do,” Etling said. “Teach life skills and lessons and I think those are the things that helped me get to where I am today. It’s something that I’m very thankful that my mom pushed me to do.”

As the quarterback of the Tigers, Etling said he still uses some of the skills that he acquired on his way to becoming an Eagle Scout on the football field.

“It (Boy Scouts) keeps you humble, keeps you working hard and going towards a goal,” Etling said. “I still use the majority of the skills that I learned as a Boy Scout as far as being able to get guys organized, working towards a common goal based on leadership.”

As for those Boy Scouts who were in attendance at the luncheon on Tuesday, Etling had the following message, “don’t give up on it. This is a tremendous opportunity. Keep pushing towards your goal and when you reach the goal of being an Eagle Scout, there’s nothing better.

“It’s something that can never be taken away. You are part of a special group that means so much. I take great pride in what I accomplished as a Boy Scout and there’s no doubt in my mind that I wouldn’t be where I am today without it.”

COACH ORGERON: Welcome, media. Good to see everybody today. We just finished a fantastic weekend. We had eight coaches out on the road recruiting on Friday, went to some games on Friday night. It was a tremendous reception. It was fun going around the State of Louisiana and other places being the head coach of LSU. It was really a fun day. Our players got a much-needed weekend off with their family, and I know they’re going to come back rested today. Our coaches had family day on Saturday. Guys were fired up at the office ready to work tomorrow, ready to get back into game week. We all called each other on Saturday morning. There was an empty feeling in all our bellies, while we wanted to compete, but we had to move forward, focus on the focus and that is Southern Miss. coming to a home game in Tigers’ stadium. We are expecting a great week of preparations starting today. We’ve identified several areas on offense, defense and special teams that we want to improve on this week, and we’re going to start drills today to do that, and we think our team will come back fired up, ready to go, looking forward to playing at home in Tigers Stadium verse Southern Miss on Saturday.

I want to talk about Southern Miss. They’re 4 and 2. Jay Hopson — I know him very well — has done a great job. His first year at Southern Miss, I know those guys are going to want to put on a good show in Louisiana. There are several players from Louisiana, several coaches from Louisiana, and I know this is a big game for them. But it’s not about them it’s about the LSU Tigers. They’re minus 8 in the turnover margin. We’re plus 1 in our new season.

Offensively, they’re spread temp, spread up tempo. 10 to 11 personnel. They have four returning starters. They’re averaging 532 yards a game. They’re ranked seventh in the nation in total offense, scored 40 points per game. Their top players, they have a very good running back in Ito Smith. He leads the team in rushing with 711 yards and has 7 touchdowns. Nick Mullens is a very good quarterback, and he has almost a 60% passing percentage, 16 TDs with eight interceptions, and D.J. Thompson is a leading wide receiver with 25 receptions for 251 yards. Their defense is multiple. 4-3, 3-4, blitz a lot. It all depends on the team they’re playing. They have six returning starters. They’ve given up only 315 yards per game, which is 16 in the nation. Jay is a defensive coach. I know he’s done a tremendous job with that defense. Their top players are Dylan Bradley, No. 94, senior defensive tackle, has five sacks on the season already. D’Narius Antoine, No. 12, senior safety and LaDarius Harris, No. 43, another defensive tackle. Special teams, they’re 25th in the nation in their punting. Check this out. Their field goal kicker Parker Shaunfield, is 100% on the field — on the season, 10 for 10 on field goals, 29 for 29 on extra points.

We expect to have a tremendous week of practice. We’re going to focus on the LSU Tigers getting better. This is our third week in our new season. We’re going to take full advantage of knowing the system, getting after it and having a tremendous practice today. Any questions?

Breaking news the LSU vs Florida game has been cancelled.

The SEC and LSU Tigers have reported the LSU vs Florida football game has been cancelled.  Hurricane Matthew approaching the Florida Coast towards Palm Beach Florida will hit by tonight or tomorrow morning. There’s 150 mph winds and lots of rain, so it will be very hard for the 2 SEC Teams to get together to play football.

Update on Florida-LSU Football Game Status

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—We are working closely with local, state and University officials as well as the Southeastern Conference office to monitor the progress of Hurricane Matthew and its potential impact on campus and the safety of the fans.

As of 5 p.m. on Wednesday, the game is still scheduled to be played on Saturday at noon at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. A final decision on the start time of the game will be made by 1 p.m. on Thursday as we continue to monitor the storm.

The game will not be moved out of Gainesville.

There will be no overnight parking lots for this weekend’s game. All lots will open on Saturday at 8 a.m.

LSU Interim Head Coach Ed Orgeron has a lot of experience and quite the experience with USC as he replaced Lane Kiffin and went 6-2. A good coach indeed who can steer the LSU program in the right direction. Coach O might be the straw that stirs the drink for the LSU Football  team, after taking over as head coach, Coach O fired Cam Camerron as offensive coordinator and appointed Steve Enisminger to call the plays for the Tigers offense.

Coach O said on Wednesday’s teleconference that Missouri is a very offensive explosive team, very tough opponent. Missouri has speed and can make big plays, and they are well coached. Coach O added our team needs to come out and play as one heartbeat, and it will be very emotional before game time. Coach O shared he learned a lot from Pete Carrol, playing pulling on the rope at midnight He feels like the team has a lot of energy, and he lets them run around practice and have fun. The news on Davon Gouchaux, the charges are dropped, and Coach O welcomed him back to the team. Leonard Fournette will be a game time decision. Coach O gives credit for his coaching career to Coach Johnson from Nichols State, Les Miles for bringing him aboard and Pete Carrol. He feels like this is a second time around meaning he played for LSU as a DE and then finished out at Northwestern State before he got into coaching football. Coach O talked about 1st purpose was team accountability, 1 game at a time, and the accountability starts with the coaches then the players. Coach O is very emotional about running out of the tunnel, and says he learned a lot since his Ole Miss days of being a head coach, also he mention on the recruiting they are getting after it, trying to to get the recruits to sign and come on in to the LSU Program. LSU game time vs the Missouri Tigers sets for 630pm on the SEC Network.
