Steve Jobs 1955-2011

I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

A recap of the Elmhurst Bluejays game, Scottie Williams big day of running, 235 yards on the ground, 3 tds, heck of a day thats for sure, the Vikings had a hard time of keeping him out of the endzone. The Bluejays defense only gave up 6 points in the game, on a reverse by the vikings, on a Sam Cochiaro 39-yard touchdown. The defense was exceptional with 2 turnovers for tds, on fumble recoveries for touchdowns. The Bluejays piling up 540 yrds, and 56 points in 3 qts, what a amazing output from the offense. Joe Furco had a big day leading the team up and down the field, 10- 15 passings, 130, ydrs, 2 tds, 5 -30 in rushing.  I am sure Coach Lester was impress with todays victory, keep on with the winning Bluejays as we continue with the season.

Nice game Alabama, Richardson with 181 yards, the difference maker.

My apologies to the Bama fans, and their team, I spoke to soon about your team. I thought the Swamp would be a tough place to play in, but holding the Gators to 15 yard of rushing is very impressive. I guess Mr. Weiss counld’nt come up with any New England, or Notre Dame plays to trick the Alabama defense. I am surprise thats for sure. Well with L.S.U. Tigers impressive victory against Kentucky, whom a SI sports writer thought LSU might be sleep walking thru the game and drop a few spots in the AP. The Nov.5th date will approach soon for the showdown between LSU and Alabama, but I am still impress with LSU’s win against Oregon, actually Oregon has average about 60 pts a game since there loss to LSU at Texas Stadium. I just tried to use ESPN’s BLOGGING, IT IS HARD TO POST ANYTHING,theres too many people trying to post stuff, or the moderator does’t want to post what I have to say.  Well I think Wisconsin has a good team, I don’t think ESPN likes LSU what so ever, Chris Childs from College Sports on XM, is talking about a Bama and Wisconsin bowl, Bama’s QB McCarron 12/25 140 yards, 5.6 per complete, against Florida, I am not impress at all, the most he has thrown the whole season, per game is about 205 yards, and that was against Kent State, and North Texas, not impress thats for sure, he already has been sacked 5 times, and we only played 5 games so far, wait til Alabama plays a really good defense. Basically if Florida would of shut down the run, they would of won the game, interesting, Trent Richardson picking up 180 yards, interesting. Well, listening to ESPN is really funny especially their recap of the Sooners win over Ball State, saying the Sooners are back on track, PLEASE thats so funny, Iam  impress with the Sooners, especially their win over Florida State, but to only beat Mizzou by 10 at home, and to rebound against Ball State,62-6, interesting thats for sure. I am not impress with Boise State either, they play a so called tough team in the beginning of the year, get a good ranking like no.4 or 5 in the nation, and play powder puff teams until the BCS games are handed out, I am not impress Boise, and especially with your blue smurf turf. Boise to have a shot at the BCS Title, everyone will have to lose, and I mean everyone……lol, which we know thats not going to happen, and then Boise State might get a shot to go to New Orleans. Well signing off, it has been a fun weekend of college football thats for sure…….

Neuheisel Is Finally Learning on the Job… But Is It Too Little Too Late?

I was encouraged to read in yesterday’s newspaper that Rick Neuheisel decided to take responsibility for failing to communicate that he wanted his punter to kick the ball out of bounds, resulting in an 85-yard return for a “Momentum-swinging touchdown” right before halftime. This is the first public act of humility any of us have seen from him during his career. As recently as a few weeks ago he was quoted as saying if he gets fired he’ll be fine and just get another job; not exactly the type of comment that endears you to people.
Perhaps the positive reaction he received from his team for his taking responsibility will help him learn the facets of leadership he never embodied before. One of the worst things that can happen to a young upstart in any vocation is having too much success before you are ready. I still remember what a successful college and NFL head coach told me at the time when I him asked about Rick Neuheisel’s great success in his first year as a head coach at the University of Colorado: “Too much, too soon, too easily.”
I was enamored with Neuheisel back then, and too young and inexperienced to fully comprehend what he meant by that. I even remember thinking he was crazy, and that Neuheisel’s future was brighter than any other coach in the game. I must admit now that his analysis was spot on and mine was wrong. Now I fully understand the wisdom in his words and have seen it play out repeatedly in all areas of life since that day.
The problem is that when things come to people too soon they miss out on learning a lot of the important steps necessary to get and stay where they have ascended so quickly. This creates the illusion (in their minds) of having knowledge of things they are often completely ignorant of. The early struggles are often what teach you the most important lessons going forward.
For example, I have been both impressed and encouraged by the amazing start to Cam Newton’s pro football career. He’s the first rookie ever to throw for over 400-yards in his first two games and he led his team to victory in near hurricane conditions yesterday. No one knows what the future holds for Cam Newton, but there’s a part of me that wonders whether it would have been better for him to have struggled more initially? Time will tell.
I have no doubt that Rick Neuheisel has more than enough football knowledge to be a great coach or strategist. The problem in my estimation is that he had success so quickly that he attributed his success (in his mind) to the very characteristics that are now bringing him down; specifically his charm and craftiness. The consensus of the people I know who have been associated with Neuheisel has always been that his biggest problem is that, like most teenagers, he thinks he’s the smartest person in any room he walks into. So like most teenagers he fails to realize that there are a lot more important ingredients in success than intelligence.
I’ve personally met and even spent some time with Neuheisel on several occasions and he is an expert at coming across as though he’s genuinely interested in you and making a great first impression. The problem is that long before the tenth or eleventh time he excitedly introduces himself to you, even an idiot can tell that it’s not about you, it’s about him and the impression he is making. He’s a classic example of a person who has everything in the world going for him, but can’t get out of his own way.
His showing of humility this past weekend is encouraging, but sadly probably too little too late. Regrettably, Rick never took the time to objectively look at himself to see how other people view him, and take it as an opportunity to better himself. Had he done this before taking the UCLA job he may very well have achieved what he dearly hoped to at his Alma mater.
